2019/20 GPL: Arthur and Kordzi late goals give Hearts dramatic Liberty win

Bernard Arthur and Kofi Kordzi scored late on as Hearts of Oak staged a dramatic turnaround to come from behind and shock Liberty Professionals with a 2-1 victory at Carl Reindorf Park Sunday.

With five minutes of normal time remaining, the Phobians were trailing to Michael Sefah’s early goal before they scored in quick succession to turn the 2019/20 Ghana Premier League match-day five Accra derby on its head.

Liberty took a surprise lead just 33 seconds after kickoff – the fastest goal yet this campaign – the opener came off a corner kick from the left and with the ball not properly cleared at the first instance, Sefah found himself free at the end to head home a rebound.

Unsettled quite early. But Hearts got into their strides and chased for the equalizer.

Liberty always looked in danger of relinquishing their lead in the first half but had shot-topper Ganiwu Shaibu putting up some shows to deny the Phobians a deserved leveler before the break.

Hearts never relented in their efforts and showed remarkable character to roar back and secure their second win of the season with quick goals in three minutes.

First, it was a former Liberty man – Bernard Arthur – who came off the bench to net an 86th-minute equalizer with his head after Kofi Kordzi’s shot from the left was not dealt with properly by Ganiwu.

And just before the clock hit the 90, Kordzi took his turn to complete the turnaround by connecting a ball from the right from close range. 2-1 the Phobians won after 5 minutes of additional time.

The scalp of Liberty at Dansoman serves as a confidence booster for Hearts as they return home to host arch-rivals Asante Kotoko in a match-day six fixture next Sunday – January 26.

They currently occupy 9th position with 7 points from a possible 15.
