President orders re-introduction of Physical Education in schools

President John Dramani Mahama has directed three Ministers to work on the re-introduction of Physical Education (P.E) into the education curriculum.

The President, while delivering the 2016 State of the Nation Address in Parliament on Thursday 25th February, revealed that the Ministries of Education, Health and Sports have been tasked to spearhead the implementation of the new directive.

According to him, students’ participation in sports will reduce diseases among the youth.

“Mr. Speaker, one cannot speak of health without speaking of physical exercise, there is the need to introduce physical education or sports unto our school curriculum as the current situation where P.E and Sports has been de-emphasized in the academic curriculum is in the long run directly costly.”

“It directly impacts the health outcomes of students in the area of students in the area of obesity and such illness that arises in their sedentary lives, it is plain to see the benefits far outweigh the cost and I have asked the ministers of education, health and sports to initiate stakeholders discussions to ensure the adequate reintegration of sports back into the school curriculum,” President Mahama added.

This will be a support of FIFA’s “11 for Health” programme that was launched in Ghana by Cameroon superstar Samuel Eto’o and FIFA Chief Medical Officer Prof Jiri Dvorak last year.
