PHOTOS: Cape Coast Stadium ready at January end

Ghana’s minister for youth and sports, Mustapha Ahmed, has revealed that the newly-built Cape Coast Sports Stadium will be handed over to government on January 31.
The 15, 000 capacity edifice is part of Ghana’s ambitions to expand sports and develop infrastructure across the country.
“On January 31, the contractor will finally hand over the stadium to us [ministry and the National Sports Authority] to pave way for the handing over and taking over ceremony,” Ahmed told Asempa FM.
“After that, a particular date will be set by government for an opening ceremony to officially announce that the stadium is ready for use.
“What amuses me is that, there are not only facilities for football there. Some other sporting disciplines will also have training facilities.”
Handled by Chinese construction firm IPPR International Engineering Corporation following a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ghanaian and the Chinese governments, the project started in 2012 and its completion is set to increase the number of standard government stadia in the country.
The Accra Sports Stadium, the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, the Sekondi-Essipong Stadium and the Tamale Sports Stadium are the already existing facilities.
The edifice is expected to have facilities for various sporting disciplines such as athletics, basketball, tennis, among, among others, asides its obvious domination by football.
The Cape Coast Stadium was expected to be among the centres of attracting should Ghana have won the bid to host the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations which was eventually handed to Gabon.
