George Afriyie demands quick fix to Black Stars bonus issues

Ghana FA veep, George Afriyie, has called for a quick settlement of issues regarding the financial packages of the senior national team, the Black Stars.

While rumours over imminent slash in winning bonus have been rife in local media since Ghana’s 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifying double-header with Comoros in November, the playing body is still owed a one-match bonus while some members of the coach Avram Grant technical team have some unspecified number of bonuses still unpaid.

“I’m hoping that this whole issue about bonus slash, debts, outstanding winning bonuses [will be fixed as soon as possible],” Afriyie who doubles as chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee told Starr FM.

“It doesn’t auger well for team building and development. We need to put those things behind within the early part of 2016 and begin to focus [on assignments ahead]. We need focus to win a trophy.

“You don’t go into a competition with players still talking about how much their going to receive and who will be paid first and all that. Those things don’t help in football development.”

With reports of an imminent reduction high ahead of the Comoros tie, Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan expressed disappointment in the development, saying that the team were “not slaves” and could not be bullied into accepting a cut.

The Black Stars return to action in March when they take on Mozambique in a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying double-header.
