U20 WWC: Black Princesses coach Yusif Basigi targets knockout stage qualification

Black Princesses head coach Yusif Basigi has targeted to qualify from the group stages of the Fifa U-20 Women’s World Cup.

Ghana will be featuring in their seventh consecutive appearance at this level and has never made it past the tournament’s group stage since their maiden participation in 2012.

Basigi’s focus is mainly set on that level of the tourney.

“I know Ghanaians are expecting us to go beyond the group stage, that is a paramount expectation. We also have it in mind,” he said in an interview with the Ghana Football Association Media.

“I was there [in the past] and it didn’t work. For now, we have gotten support from the FA and the ministry for our training sessions.

“So the expectation from Ghanaians is also what we expect; to go beyond the group stage before we can think of other things.”

The Black Princesses are in Group E alongside Austria, Japan and New Zealand.

The Fifa U-20 Women’s World Cup kicks off on August 31 and ends on September 22, 2024, in Colombia. It will be the first iteration of the tournament with an expanded 24-team format.
