GPL Referees to use VAR Lite for officiating – Refs Manager Alex Kotey

Referees Manager at the Ghana Football Association, Alex Kotey, has revealed the administration’s plan to introduce the Video Assistant Referee in the Ghana Premier League.

Kotey was speaking to Citi Sports in an interview and admits the challenge with poor officiating in the Ghanaian top-flight.

Ahead of the 2024/25, the Ghana FA might improvise on giving referees assistance in making tight calls during game by introducing the VAR Lite.

Kotey had earlier adviced the GFA to find a solution to the wrong calls of referees in the league and the immediate option, technology wise, was the VAR.

Fifa plans to provide a less costly option of the VAR for member associations with a lower budget.

And Kotey explained that the decision to adopt VAR Lite, as opposed to the standard VAR system, is due to financial constraints.

“We are working assiduously on that – providing VAR – we have not let it go. FIFA is trying to introduce a less costly VAR which is the VAR Lite, so when the VAR Lite comes, we will see how best we can bring it on because that one doesn’t need a lot of cameras.”

“The only challenge there is that you don’t get some features in the VAR Lite as compared to the full VAR but of course it is just a stepping stone,” Kotey added.

It was years back – September 2020 – that the Ghana Football Association planned to apply for VAR to be used in their domestic competitions.

The 2023/24 GPL ends on Sunday as the last round of matches determines who gets relegated. Should VAR be available, better decision on calls would have played a bigger role in the result of the clash.
