John Painstil is fit for Black Stars job – Asamoah Gyan

Ghanaian football legend Asamoah Gyan supports the appointment of John Painstil as the assistant coach of the Black Stars.

Making a return to the Black Stars head coach role, Otto Addo named the former Fulham and West Ham right-back in his coaching staff, alongside Joseph Laumann and Fatau Dauda.

Laumann serves as the first assistant coach while Dauda is the goalkeepers coach.

The role of Painstil as the second assistant did receive criticism from Ghanaians, some claiming he was incapable of the role.

However, Gyan disagrees with that assertion and says Painstil can help the national team.

‘‘John (Paintsil) sacrificed a lot for the national team but people seem to forget. After retirement, he went to coach in South Africa as an assistant and gathered relevant experience,’’ Gyan said on Asempa FM.

‘‘If you look at his life after retirement, all he’s done is coaching. So if I look at his records and what he has done, I can only support his appointment to the assistant’s role,’’ Gyan added.

Painstil’s first assignment was the two friendlies in March against Nigeria and Uganda. Ghana drew 2-2 against the Cranes and lost 2-1 to Nigeria.
