Chris Hughton satisfied with performance as Ghana books spot for Afcon 2023

Ghana coach Chris Hughton spoke with satisfaction after his side’s victory against Central African Republic in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

The Black Stars produced a strong comeback performance after conceding an early goal from Louis Mafouta to win 2-1 at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

Mohammed Kudus levelled with an superb free kick before half time and Ernest Nuamah connected to Antoine Semenyo’s pass during the latter stages.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Hughton highlighted the improvement in African football and the fact that Ghana topped their group.

“First of all, I have to acknowledge the level of all the lower ranked teams in African football and how they have really improved.

“Central African Republic played well in the opening stages and we had to really get into the game.

“From the games we have handled, I think we must take note of the fact that we finished top of our group. A difficult group that we had to win on the final day of qualifiers.

“That’s what we need to take note and upgrade on the positives and fix the negatives.

“Now the qualification is great for us and I believe we will work well to get ready for the tourney.”

Ghana qualified alongside Angola who managed a goalless result against Madagascar to book their spot.

This is the 11th consecutive qualification in the Africa Cup of Nations for the four-time champions since missing out in Tunisia 2004.
