2023/24 UECL: Kwabena Owusu powers Ferencváros to victory with penalty win and goal vs Čukarički

Ghana forward Kwabena Owusu played a pivotal role for Ferencvárosi TC as they secured a 3-1 victory over FK Čukarički in their opening game in Group F of the 2023/24 Uefa Europa Conference League at the Groupama Stadium in Budapest on Thursday night.

The 26-year-old’s performance was instrumental in the win, as he both won a crucial penalty and added a goal to his name, marking his first goal of the season in six games.

It was the visiting Serbian side, Čukarički, who took a surprise lead in the 26th minute when Đorđe Ivanović capitalized on a rare chance to score against the run of play, stunning the home crowd with a well-timed first-time effort.

Kwabena Owusu’s first significant impact came in the 40th minute when his relentless effort forced Ivanović to foul him in the opponent’s penalty area. Barnabás Varga confidently converted the ensuing penalty in the 44th minute, leveling the score for Ferencváros.

Owusu continued to shine, adding his personal goal and the second for the hosts with a brilliant curler that took a deflection before finding the back of the net in the seventh minute of first half added time.

A 79th-minute goal from substitute striker Aleksandar Pešić sealed the 3-1 victory for the Hungarian giants.

This win marks a strong start to Ferencvárosi TC’s Europa Conference League campaign. Following the opening matches, they now sit atop Group F, a group that also includes last season’s finalist KRC Genk as well as Fiorentina, clubs boasting the presence of Kwabena Owusu’s fellow Ghanaian mates Joseph Paintsil, Christopher Bonsu Baah, and Joseph Alfred Duncan, respectively.

Fiorentina held Genk to a 2-2 draw away in their matchup, with Alfred Duncan playing the full match for the Italians. Paintsil did not feature in the match-day squad for Genk, while Bonsu Baah was introduced in the second half for the Belgian side.
