Kotoko and Legon Cities split points in 1-1 draw

Asante Kotoko failed to defeat Legon Cities at home for the second straight season as the two sides drew 1-1 on match-day 7 of the 2022/23 Ghana Premier League (GPL).

Last season, the Porcupine Warriors lost 3-1 to the Royals at Baba Yara Sports Stadium on their way to winning the league title.

Starting on the front foot, Kotoko were awarded a penalty 13 minutes on when Cities defender Suleman Mohammed brought down striker Steven Mukwala illegally in the box.

And the Ugandan did not miss the opportunity to register his second goal of the campaign by giving Kotoko the lead via the spot-kick in the 15th minute.

There were decent opportunities for both sides, but the solitary goal lead held up until the break.

Looking to cancel the deficit, Legon Cities bombarded their hosts until the equaliser arrived in the 50th minute.

Sadat Mohammed eventually scored at the third attempt following two point-blank saves from Kotoko goalkeeper Frederick Asare.

Jonah Attuquaye proved a handful for Kotoko who also hit the post a couple of times at the other end of the field. The Legon Cities captain received the man-of-the-match award.

The 1-1 draw sees Asante Kotoko drop to third in the league standings with 14 points. Legon Cities tally 11 points and sit 6th after 7 games.
