Kotoko will pay Konadu $9,000 compensation, not residual salary – CEO insists

Chief Executive Officer for Asante Kotoko, Nana Yaw Amponsah says the club will only pay the compensation amount stated in their contract with former coach Maxwell Konadu.

The Porcupines parted ways with the Ghanaian gaffer after their shocking 1-0 loss to Great Olympics in December 2020.

Expressing his displeasure on the sack, Konadu reported Kotoko to the Player Status Committee, explaining a breach in the contract agreement.

After several back and forths between the petitioner and the respondent, the adjudicatory body finally ruled for the Reds to pay the full-year salary of Konadu($36,000) and then other payments totalling $41,100.

In their judgement, the Committee also said Kotoko’s sack of Konadu was premature and without just cause.

The Ghanaian giants have said they will appeal the ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) and in an interview Monday evening with Opemsuo Radio, the CEO further explained their decision.

“We had agreed to pay our former coach and we heard a lot of comments saying we should pay to clear all the rumours. But the question is “how much do we have to pay?

“Since the matter was sent to the GFA, we now had to defend our club from his demands and suspend our agreed plan.

Amponsah continued: “We agree with certain parts of the ruling and there are others we can’t accept. And that’s why we will head to CAS.

“Common contract law states that we can only pay residual salary when there’s no compensation clause in the contract.”

“In this case, the compensation agreement is clear. It states that whoever terminates the deal must pay three months salary. That’s what we want to do.”

Why Maxwell Konadu was sacked

The Ghanaian giants claimed Konadu had not “exhibited a high level of performance which will prepare the team to the height it deserves to be.”

Kotoko’s compensation plan

Asante Kotoko offered to pay the salary of Konadu for three months ($9000 as total compensation), the balance of his signing-on fee (GH¢30,000) and two match-winning bonuses (GH¢2,000).
