Liberty beat 10-man Olympics to pick first three points

Liberty Professionals picked their first three points of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League (GPL) by beating Great Olympics 2-0 at the Carl Reindorf Park on Sunday.

The first half action saw both sides creating just a few goal-scoring opportunities.

Great Olympics captain Gladson Awako nearly shot the visitors ahead in the 26th minute but his free-kick went over the bar.

Two minutes later, Liberty drew first blood through forward Simon Asamoah Appiah who tapped home a beautiful cross from Abraham Wayo from the left-wing.

Great Olympics began pushing for an equalizer but striker Mannan Mudasiru squandered the few opportunities created.

Inside first-half stoppage time, the visitors suffered a big blow as Maxwell Abbey Quaye received his marching orders after a second yellow card following a bad challenge on Abraham Wayo.

The first half ended with Liberty running into the dressing room with their slim lead.

Back from recess, Olympics’ Mannan Mudasiru had a fine chance to pull parity but his effort was cleared just on the goal line by Liberty defender Satar Mohammed.

In the 70th minute, Awako’s free-kick missed the post by a whisker leaving Liberty on the edge despite their numerical advantage.

Liberty increased the tally when Abraham Wayo raced from the right side of attack to set off Simon Appiah for his brace in the 76th minute.

Referee Charles Bulu ended the game with the 2-0 result giving Liberty Professionals their first three points in five games.

Liberty will now go on six points after three opening 1-1 draw games and a defeat.
