Ghana legend Kwasi Owusu dies at 72

Another former Ghana international, Kwasi Owusu has kicked the bucket less than 24 hours after the demise of another legend of the country Opoku Afriyie.

The legendary striker – born on November 7, 1947 – passed away on Monday morning in his hometown Sunyani after a short illness at age 72. A family source disclosed that Owusu had been taken to the hospital on Sunday and was brought back home later in the day but gave up the ghost this morning.

Owusu never played for any foreign club in his whole football career which spanned over 30 years. But was highly adored due to his striking prowess.

The bulky striker – nicknamed Powerhouse – only featured for local side Bofoakwa Tano throughout his career.

He rose to stardom after his debut in the 1970 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Niger when he netted nine goals in both legs to hand Ghana qualification. He continued to captain the Black Stars during the tournament.

Kwasi Owusu was considered Ghana’s leading goal scorer with 36 goals until Asamoah Gyan surpassed him in June 2013.
