Official: Akonnor lands Kotoko job for three years

Asante Kotoko have officially tied down former Ghana captain C.K Akonnor as their new head coach for the next three years.

A technical search committee instituted by the club headhunted the 44-year-old former Wolfsburg midfielder over Yusif Abubakar and other foreign applicants after the post was made vacant by the resignation of Paa Kwasi Fabin earlier in September.

Having held fruitful talks over the Porcupine Warriors’ job, Akonnor – on Sunday – watched his new charges thrash Berekum Chelsea 3-0 in a friendly at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium before going ahead to sign his three-year contact Monday morning.

A club statement reads:

“Kotoko have signed a three-year contract with coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor with the former Black Stars captain expected to lead the technical bench till 2021.

The signing was done at the Sports Hotel in Kumasi on Monday 1st October, 2018 with Kotoko represented by Chief Executive Officer, George Amoako, with the backing of management members Yaw Amo Sarpong, Samuel Sarfo Duku (esq), Edmund Ackah and Nana Kwame Dankwah

The former Wolfsburg captain said, after the signing, that he is bringing on board a philosophy he calls the ‘Agroball’ which combines entertainment with goals and hopes to get the support of the club’s hierarchy, including the supporters.”

The new Kotoko coach will be officially introduced to his players and later to the media on Wednesday, October 3.

C.K Akonnor has had coaching stints with Sekondi XI Wise, Hearts of Oak, Dreams FC and very recently his boyhood club AshantiGold with whom he parted ways late June.
