Cast your net wider – Shilla Illiasu tells Avram Grant

Former Ghana International Shilla Illiasu has asked Coach of the Black Stars Avram Grant to cast his net wide so he can get lots of options in his selection of players for the AFCON 2017.

Ghana has been drawn in Group D alongside seven time champions Egypt, Uganda and Mali for next year’s AFCON.

Fans have described the group as a difficult but the former Kotoko defender believes Ghana can sail through with the right players available.

Illiasu in an interview with footy-ghana.com said: “Frankly speaking when I watched the draw, I was like the day has come for Ghana football to prove to the African continent that we are capable of doing what everyone is expecting from us but the most important thing is that our players, especially Dede and Kwadwo Asamoah should regain their fitness and those who are already fit, it is my prayer that they should stay fit.”

“I am very positive that if we get all players intact, and the coach casts his net wider to make sure every capable Ghanaian player gets a look, we can do well,” he added.

Shilla Illiasu was part of the 2006 World Cup squad that featured for the Black Stars in Germany and has had stints with local teams such as Real Republicans, King Faisal and Kotoko.
