Grant fires Black Stars over disappointing World Cup episode

Former Ghana striker Kim Grant has taken a swipe at players of the Black Stars for ‘holding the nation to ransom’ at the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil.

The Black Stars boycotted training sessions at the global gathering in protest over unpaid appearance fees.

The episode, though, has come with some negative repercussions as the team has struggled to win the nation’s total support in recent matches.

“I don’t even think they should get bonus at all, why should they? They are playing for the flag (Ghana) and that is enough motivation,” Grant told Starr FM.

“They earn enough money playing [with] lucrative contracts in the premier leagues and elsewhere.

“So this is just a token gesture for them but for them to scribble over $10,000 I think it is ‘nonsense’ that is my opinion.

“Every player has a different perspective playing for the national team and if money is their motivation then they don’t need to be selected at all.”

In a recent development, the Ministry for Sports has slashed the Black Stars’ winning bonus from $10,000 to $8,000.
