REPORT: Why Ghana-Guinea friendly was called off

The Ghana FA had accepted an offer for the Black Stars to play a warm-up game with Guinea in France on May 28 but it was called off five days prior.

A statement by the Ghana FA announced that the “decision was taken after the Guinean Football Federation pulled out of the game to enable them resolve some internal problems.”

Footy-Ghana has uncovered that the FGF were unsettled by the sudden resignation of head coach for the Syli Nationale, Luis Fernandez who had requested for the game to help his side’s preparation for their crucial penultimate 2017 Nations Cup qualifier away to Swaziland on June 5.

Luis Fernandez, a former coach of French giants PSG decided to call it quits with Guinea after months of constant criticism because of his extra duties as a TV-Radio pundit back in his homeland while contracted as a Guinea coach.

Fed up with the bashing amidst issues with the Federation, Fernandez, who was appointed by Guinea in April 2015, decided to throw in the towel this week but explains his backroom will remain till the end of the Afcon qualifiers.

“I am terminating my contract as coach of Guinea. We part as good friends. There has been a lot of changes, changes in the Federation since my arrival. My staff will remain in place to complete it and play the last game,” he announced.

Meanwhile, the FGF has appointed local coach Kanfory Lappé Bangoura to take interim charge of the Syli Nationale.

Guinea on equal points (5) with Swaziland and three behind Zimbabwe, must win their last two games in Group to stand the chance of qualifying for the 2017 Nations Cup in Gabon.
