GPL Wrap: Aduana, Kotoko win big; All Stars stun Berekum Chelsea

Asante Kotoko and Aduana Stars were big winners while Wa All Stars shocked Berekum Chelsea at home as the curtains were drawn on the first half of the 2015/16 Ghana Premier League on Sunday.

Asante Kotoko thumped Techiman City 4-2 in their first ever meet at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday. The Porcupines began the feast in the 20th minute with a penalty converted by striker Dauda Mohammed. He followed up with another goal four minutes later after an error by goalkeeper Richmond Ayi.

Dauda Mohammed completed his hat-trick in the second half but Okyere Sarpong pulled one back for the visitors. Defender Edwin Tuffour Frimpong then scored goal number 4 but Ebenezer Agyapong pegged back again. 4-2 it ended for Kotoko who finish the first half of the season at third position – two points behind leaders Wa All Stars who snatched a 1-0 victory at Berekum Chelsea.

Richard Arthur continued his impressive run as his solo goal in the 80th minute, again, secured the important victory against Berekum Chelsea. His goal handed All Stars a win over Kotoko in midweek. Wa All Stars remain top of the table with 28 points at the end the first round.

A brace each by Bright Adjei and Yahaya Mohammed saw Aduana Stars score 4 past visiting Bechem United at the Dormaa Park. Abednego Tetteh and Aminu Mohammed however scored for Bechem to end the scores at 4-2 in favour of the 2009 league champions.

Hearts of Oak dropped points again after surviving an initial scare to draw 1-1 away to Dreams FC. Striker Lawson Bekui punished the Phobians after a defensive mishap in the 17th minute but winger Paul Acquah levelled the scoring six minutes from time.

Aduana Stars, Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak tie on same points, 26, after 15 games with the Dormaa side taking the 2nd position with superior goal advantage. Hearts rank least among the trio and now occupy fourth position.

Crisis-hit New Edubiase United who had signalled pulling out of the league on Friday showed up for their game against Medeama at the T&A Park. The hosts were in no mood for mercy as they snatched all three available points with two unanswered goals from Daniel Amoah and Kwasi Donsu. With two outstanding games – against Techiman City and Liberty yet to clear, Medema temporarily occupy 9th position with 20 points.

A Stephen Bentil equalizer was enough for Ebusua Dwarfs to force a 1-1 draw with Liberty Professionals at the Carl Reindorf Park in Dansoman. Tamimu Muntari had shot the hosts into an early lead.

Sekondi Hasaacas started well at home to Inter Allies with Ibrahim Suleiman scoring the opener. Midfielder Gockel Ahortor however had other plans to stop the party at the Essipong Stadium. He scored spectacularly from a free kick – his third this season to bring the game 1-1 at half time. The status quo remained same after the final whistle.

On Saturday, WAFA SC held AshantiGold to a scoreless stalemate at the Len Clay Stadium.
