CAF CC: Medeama beat Sundowns 2-0, secure ‘Money Zone’ ticket

Ghana’s Medeama SC produced two goals without reply against Mamelodi Sundowns to reach the group stage of the 2016 CAF Confederation Cup Wednesday.

The Mauve and Yellows executed their minimum requirement of a 2-0 scoreline  to overturn a 1-3 first leg deficit suffered at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria ten days ago.

Medeama did the business of qualifying on the away goals rule courtesy goals in either half by Malik Akowuah and Bernard Ofori at the Essipon Stadium in Sekondi.

Sundowns came under pressure early into the contest, with goalkeeper Denis Onyango being forced into a number of saves.

The hosts eventually struck in the 36th minute via captain Malik Akowuah’s successful penalty following a foul in the box by Thabo Nthethe.

Bernard Ofori then made it 2-0 in the 64th minute.

The visitors suffered a further setback moments later with the sending off of Onyango for a kick on striker Abass Mohammed, prompting Pitso Mosimane to bring on keeper Kennedy Mweene for Bangaly Soumahoro.

Sundowns pressed but were unable to find a way back as Medeama earned a spot in the group stages draw set for May 24 in Cairo.
