GPL: Hearts overpowered us with fitness – Kwame Opuni

Bechem United head coach Stephen Kwame Opuni has attributed his side’s defeat at the hands of Hearts of Oak to better fitness on the part of the Phobians.

Bechem United suffered a 3-1 thrashing from Hearts of Oak on Match Day 4 of the 2015/16 Ghana Premier League on Sunday at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Kwame Opuni does not believe his tactics failed him but has owed the loss to an overwhelming fitness of the opposing team who now top the league log win 10 points.

“We came to surprise Accra Hearts of Oak but when the game started, I realized they had an advantage of a better fitness over my team and that was their weapon to beat us,” he said after the match.

The coach says he takes what transpired as a lesson and will pick the positives to better his side who are seeking to make an impact in their fifth season in the Ghanaian top flight.

“In a way I’m disappointed because some of my boys made petty mistakes that should not happen and in the other way, it’s good that this happened, it is going to help me.

“Now that I have seen that my team is poor as far as fitness is concerned, I have to increase the load for fitness. It has taught me a lesson,” Kwame Opuni said.

The Hunters had their consolation come from the boots of John Nyamekye after Hearts had taken a commanding lead through Samuel Yeboah, Mustapha Essuman and Isaac Mensah.

United currently lie 8th on the standings with six points, and will host Ebusua Dwarfs at the Bechem Park on match day 5 next Sunday.
