Six (6) of the most powerful Ghana Premier League clubs are vehemently opposed to moves by the ten (10) other clubs to squash the current “Home Team Takes All” approach to match day revenue from gate proceeds, footy-GHANA.com has gathered.
The existing arrangement among all 16 premier league clubs allows every team to collect full revenue from their home games. But some clubs believe the arrangement gives clubs with big-capacity stadia undue advantage. Instead, clubs want match day revenue to be shared on percentage basis.
This suggestion has however not be accepted by 6 clubs, some of which play in some of the biggest grounds in the country. The idea was nurtured at a meeting with the Premier League Board (PLB) on Tuesday in which 11 clubs were present.
Chief Executive Officer of premier league champions AshantiGold, one of the clubs said to be opposed to the move, exclusively revealed to Footy-GHANA.com in an interview that the “Home Team Takes All” is standard practice across the globe.
“Where have you heard somebody going to play at the Alliance Arena and asking to share the revenue from there? Or you go and play at Old Trafford and ask that you share the revenue with Manchester United.
“The decision to make home teams take the match day revenue was taken after careful consideration. If a club invests money on media hype and promos and people show up at the stadium, they should take all the money,” Cudjoe Fianoo told Footy-Ghana.
The PLB is expected to meet the Executive Committee of the Ghana Football Association at noon on Thursday to find a resolution to the problem.
