Ghana’s David Accam has been ruled out of the Black Sars’ pair of 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying games against Mozambique due to a knee setback.
The Chicago Fire high flying winger was sidelined for Saturday’s MLS clash with Harrison Afful’s Columbus Crew due to a left knee sprain he suffered during a training session.
Fire coach, Veljko Paunovic in a presser after Saturday’s match has confirmed that the injury would keep Accam from international action.
“He [Accam] is healing and will miss his international call with Ghana which is, for everyone, something very important,” Paunovic said.
“But I think the most important thing is his health and we believe that now he has to stay and the medical staff will work on him and recover.”
Accam had begun the new MLS season so well, wreaking havoc on opposing defenses in the opening games but it is feared the setback could slow down the Ghana international.
Chicago Fire are anticipating a return to match action for Accam, who has already scored twice and provided an assist this season, in the club’s next outing at home to Philadelphia Union on Saturday, April 2.
Ghana are preparing to host Mozambique in Accra on Thursday March 24 with a reverse fixture set to take place in Maputo three days later.
