AFCON 2017Q: Gyan suffers thigh strain ahead of Mozambique tie

Ghana skipper Asamoah Gyan, this morning, suffered a thigh strain during the Black Stars’ final training session for Thursday’s 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Mozambique.

The 30-year-old forward, who recently declared himself fully fit and raring to go, suffered the setback after stretching for a ball from midfielder Rabiu Mohammed during the training at the Accra Stadium.

Black Stars coach in a pre-match presser mentioned he could not give assurances on the fitness of Gyan until kick off due to the nature of the Accra Stadium pitch.

“Asamoah Gyan played 90 minutes in the last two games [for his club]. There is no better assurance that he is [ready].

“[But] we cannot be sure that any player cannot be injured before the game especially with the nature of this pitch. So there is no guarantee but he is fully fit [at the moment],” Grant had said on Tuesday.

Gyan will undergo assessment by team doctor Adam Baba to determine the severity of the thigh strain.

Gyan has scored 48 goals in 95 appearances for Ghana and would be hoping to feature against the Os Mambas to increase his goal tally.

Mozambique play guests to the Black Stars at the Accra Sports Stadium on Thursday. Game starts at 15:30 GMT.
