Acheampong calm about Black Stars return

By Prince Narkortu Teye

Ghana midfielder Frank Acheampong is patiently awaiting a recall after being left in the cold by Black Stars coach Avram Grant.

Acheampong has been overlooked by the Israeli since a nondescript performance in a 1-0 friendly win over Togo ahead of a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier with Mauritius at the Accra Sports Stadium in June.

“The national team is always there and he [Grant] is the coach,” Acheampong told Kasapa FM.

“We have so many players in Europe and even in the country. I can’t say much but I know my time will surely come. I know I will be back at the right time.

“I am always ready to come back because it is every player’s dream to wear the colours of his country.

“But we all can’t be in the national team at the same time. Hopefully, I will get my chance again.”

Acheampong made his national team bow as an 18-year-old in a 1-1 away draw with China in an international friendly in 2012.

A year later, he played an instrumental role as Ghana picked bronze at the 2013 Fifa Under-20 World Cup in Turkey.

Although ignored by then Ghana manager Kwesi Appiah for Ghana’s disastrous 2014 Fifa World Cup campaign, the Anderlecht player made Ghana’s squad for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations for Grant’s first assignment upon his Black Stars takeover.

However, the winger ended the tournament on a not-too-good note, missing his kick in a penalty shootout defeat to Cote d’Ivoire in the final.

Acheampong has 11 league appearances for Anderlecht in the Belgium topflight this season.
