Gyan to construct astroturf for alma mater

Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan’s latest gesture to develop local football is to build an artificial pitch for his alma mater.

Having been educated in one of Ghana’s top public secondary schools, the striker will be breaking ground on a plot of land at the Accra Academy. The ceremony will be on Thursday.

This project will be the latest in a series of schemes the player is engaging in to give back to the society. Gyan, who turned 30 on Sunday, announced the AstroTurf project while donating to Ghana’s senior national women’s team on Monday.

The team, the Black Queens, had been promised $30 000 by the superstar on condition that they won gold at the recent All Africa Games. Against all odds, the team beat Cameroon in the final, and Monday’s donation was Gyan’s fulfillment of his pledge.

He had earlier given the team $10 000 before the tournament started in Congo Brazzaville as motivation.

The Ghana captain, regularly listed as one of Africa’s richest footballers, is noted for his philanthropy.
