Berekum Chelsea fought back to secure a dramatic 2-2 draw against newly promoted Basake Holy Stars in a thrilling 2024/25 Ghana Premier League clash at Golden City Park on Sunday.
After suffering their first defeat of the season last week, the Bibires were eager to bounce back and the match-week nine home fixture was the perfect stage and moment.
They took the lead just before halftime, with forward Emmanuel Sarpong continuing his impressive form by scoring in his second consecutive home game.
However, Holy Stars displayed remarkable resilience, levelling the match, eleven minutes into the second half with Stephen Awuah Baffour’s strike, boosting the visitors in their inaugural top-flight campaign.
Holy Stars then took the lead for the first time when Burkinabe striker Ben Daouda Sidibe scored ten minutes before full-time, leaving Chelsea on the brink of back-to-back losses.
In search of the equalizer, the Blues pressed forward in the match’s dying moments. Their efforts paid off when Stephen Amankona netted a crucial stoppage-time goal, securing a hard-fought point for the home side and avoiding consecutive losses.
The stalemate puts Chelsea 5th in the league standings as they brace themselves for their match-week 10 away trip against Hearts of Lions who picked an important triumph against Asante Kotoko.
Holy Stars, on the other hand, will host Accra Lions in Ainyinase, in hopes of boosting their chances of keeping a spot for next season’s GPL.
