Ghana suffers 2-1 defeat to Nigeria in Wafu Zone B U-20 Championship final

The Black Satellites of Ghana fell short of gold in a closely contested final against Nigeria at the 2024 WAFU Zone B U20 Championship, held Wednesday night at Stade de Kégué.

Despite a valiant effort, Ghana was edged out 2-1, allowing their West African rivals to claim the title.

Star forward Jerry Afriyie scored for Ghana, marking his fifth goal of the tournament and capping off an impressive individual performance throughout the competition.

However, Afriyie’s goal was not enough to overcome a determined Nigerian side that proved resolute until the final whistle.

While Ghana missed the top spot, their strong showing in this year’s championship earned them qualification for the 2025 CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations.

This upcoming tournament will present another chance for the Black Satellites to secure a place in the FIFA U20 World Cup.

In the tournament’s third-place match, Ivory Coast defeated Niger 2-1 to take home the bronze medal.

Returning with silver, Ghana’s Black Satellites have established a promising foundation and look ahead to future competitions with renewed optimism.
