Conflict of Interest: Caf issues Kwasi Appiah deadline over Ghana FA, Sudan coach roles

The Confederation of African Football (Caf) has formally instructed Ghanaian coach Kwasi Appiah to step down from one of his two prominent roles due to concerns over a “conflict of interest.”

Appiah, who currently serves as a member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council and head coach of Sudan’s national team, has until Tuesday, October 8, to comply with Caf’s directive.

The letter, signed by Caf’s Director of Legal Affairs Felix Majani, states: “It has come to our attention that you are currently holding two significant positions: Member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council and Head coach of Sudan’s national football team. This situation is contrary to the Caf Statutes and the Fifs Code of Ethics.”

Caf’s concerns stem from the fact that Ghana and Sudan are in the same group for the ongoing Afcon 2025 qualifiers.

The two nations are set to face each other in back-to-back fixtures on October 10 in Accra and October 14 in Benghazi, Libya.

“Your dual roles create an apparent conflict of interest,” the letter continues.

“To preserve the integrity of the Afcon qualifiers, I urge you to take immediate action to resolve this conflict of interest, including, at a minimum, temporarily stepping down from one of the two roles until the conclusion of the Competition.”

Appiah’s deadline for providing proof of action is Tuesday, with Caf warning that failure to comply will result in the case being referred to the Caf Disciplinary Board.

The Ghanaian coach, who led the Black Stars to the 2014 Fifa World Cup, has not yet issued a statement on his decision.
