Afcon 2025Q: Isaac Afful earns debut Black Stars call-up for Sudan clashes

FC Samartex defender Isaac Afful has been handed his debut call-up to Ghana’s senior national team for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers.

The 25-year-old left-back, whose consistent performances last season helped Samartex to a league title and earned him praise during their Caf Champions League campaign, caught the attention of head coach Otto Addo. His excellent form, despite the team’s eventual exit from the competition, secured his spot in the 25-man squad for the crucial doubleheader against Sudan on October 10 and 15, 2024.

Asante Kotoko goalkeeper Frederick Asare retained his place as the only other Ghana Premier League (GPL) player in the squad.

The Black Stars will assemble in Accra on Monday to prepare for the first encounter against the Falcons of Jediane. Sudan, now managed by former Ghana coach Kwasi Appiah, will host the reverse fixture in Libya.

After a home defeat to Angola and a draw with Niger last month, Ghana has just one point from two games in Group I of the 2025 Afcon qualifiers.
