Black Stars defender Mohammed Salisu netted his first-ever Champions League goal as AS Monaco fought back to earn a 2-2 draw against Dinamo Zagreb in a pulsating match on Wednesday night.
Monaco, buoyed by their opening win against Barcelona, arrived in Croatia full of confidence. Meanwhile, Dinamo Zagreb were looking to bounce back after a humbling 9-2 defeat to Bayern Munich.
The home side dominated early proceedings and found the breakthrough just before half-time. Petar Sucic calmly slotted home in stoppage time, giving Zagreb a deserved lead.
Zagreb doubled their advantage in the 66th minute, with Martin Baturina adding to Monaco’s woes, leaving the visitors in danger of defeat.
However, Salisu offered Monaco a glimmer of hope just eight minutes later. Rising at the back post, the Ghanaian defender headed in from a corner to halve the deficit and swing the momentum back in his team’s favour.
Monaco’s persistence paid off when Denis Zakaria converted a penalty late on to secure a crucial point for the Ligue 1 side.
Salisu’s goal, his first in club football since September 2021 when he scored for Southampton in a Carabao Cup tie against Sheffield United, capped a memorable night for the defender.6
