GFA President Kurt Okraku denies embezzlement of 2022 Fifa World Cup funds

President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku,   has dismissed allegations of missing funds from the $9 million prize awarded to the Black Stars for their participation in the 2022 World Cup.

During a recent appearance before the Parliamentary Select Committee, the football governing Chief provided a detailed breakdown of the fund distribution, revealing that the GFA received $2.8 million. At the same time, the government retained the remaining amount.

Okraku asserted that there is no dispute over accountability, and highlighted ongoing initiatives, including plans for a 40-bed accommodation facility in Prampram, to improve the association’s infrastructure.

“There is no dispute about accountability or lack of accountability. As an FA, after our discussions with the government, our share of the inflow was 2.8 million, which will go into legacy projects.

“As we speak, the council is going through the motions. We’ve already made public announcements at the Football Congress about our intention to invest in a 40-bed accommodation facility on our land in Prampram.”

Despite Okraku’s reassurances, reports of unaccounted funds have raised concerns about potential mismanagement and corruption within the GFA and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Sights will be set on Ghana’s remaining 2026 World Cup and 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The next game is against Sudan on October 11, 2024.
