I hope Ghanaians still appreciate my service to the nation – Michael Essien

Former Ghana midfielder Michael Essien has reflected on his time with senior national team, addressing criticisms about his commitment during his playing days.

Despite a successful club career, many Ghanaians have questioned his dedication to the national team.

Essien, who earned 59 caps and scored nine goals with the Black stars, played a crucial role in the country’s historic first World Cup qualification in 2006.

The former Chelsea man was also part of the squads for two Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments, featuring prominently in the 2008 edition but suffering an injury early in AFCON 2010, which sidelined him for the remainder of the competition.

However, he expressed uncertainty about whether his contributions are fully appreciated by Ghanaians.

“I hope they are. I think I’m one of the few players who have gone through every age category, represented the country at all levels, and succeeded, so I hope they appreciate it,” Essien told Joy Sports.

Critics often accused Essien of not giving his all for the national team, but the former AC Milan player revealed that injuries disrupted his Black Stars career.

“My first major injury happened while playing for the Black Stars against Libya, when I severely damaged my knee.

“Injuries are part of the game, and while they may open up opportunities for others, they affected my time with the team.”

“Most of my serious injuries occurred while I was with the Black Stars, but that’s life. I don’t hold any grudges.

“But I have no regrets and I think I had a decent career. I always try to focus on the positives.”

Now 41 and an assistant coach at FC Nordsjaelland, Essien is one of the few players to have represented Ghana at every level of international football.

He played at the 2001 Fifa U-20 World Cup as Ghana finished second after the 3-0 thrashing from Argentina.
