President Akufo-Addo dismisses NSA boss amid football infrastructure crisis

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has dismissed Dr Dodzie Numekevor, the Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), following growing concerns over the state of the country’s football infrastructure.

The move, which takes immediate effect, was confirmed by sources close to the presidency at Jubilee House.

The decision is believed to stem from dissatisfaction with the deteriorating conditions of Ghana’s football pitches, which have drawn criticism in recent months.

Dr Numekevor’s tenure as interim Director General of the NSA began in February 2024, following the departure of Professor Peter Twumasi, who had held the position for six years.

However, his leadership has been under scrutiny after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) imposed a ban on the use of the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, the nation’s primary venue for international matches.

CAF’s decision came after repeated warnings to improve the stadium’s facilities were not heeded, leaving Ghana without a suitable venue for its international fixtures.

The ban means the Black Stars will likely play their next Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 qualifying match against Sudan in October at a neutral venue, with Morocco, Ivory Coast, or Nigeria as potential hosts.

The dismissal of Dr Numekevor is seen as part of the government’s efforts to address the ongoing crisis in sports infrastructure, with many stakeholders calling for urgent reforms.
