Former Ghana Football Association Executive Committee member, Dr. Tony Aubynn says the newly built TNA Stadium in Tarkwa could have been a viable alternative if it met CAF’s Category 3 requirements.
In the aftermath of CAF’s ban on the Baba Yara Stadium, which leaves Ghana without a suitable venue for the 2025 Afcon qualifiers, football authorities are searching for alternatives for the Black Stars’ next game.
The Accra Sports Stadium and Cape Coast Sports Stadiums have also been included in the Caf decision.
Category 3 games require host venues to accommodate at least 30,000 spectators, while the TNA Stadium currently seats just over 10,000.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with ChannelOne, the Medeama SC Board Chairman voiced his disappointment over the ban and the missed opportunity to use the TNA Stadium.
“At the moment, I believe the TNA Stadium is the best in the country. Unfortunately, its capacity is not sufficient for AFCON qualifiers.
“Otherwise, given the current challenges, we would have suggested Tarkwa as an alternative venue,” Aubynn stated.
The Tarkwa and Abosso Stadium is a US$16million-worth edifice, constructed by the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation for the people of Tarkwa and its environs.

Ghana is set to play Sudan in their next AFCON qualifier in October, and the search for a suitable venue continues.
