Sunderland sign midfielder Salis Abdul Samed on season-long loan

Ghana midfielder Salis Abdul Samed has officially joined AFC Sunderland on loan after the English club announced his capture.

The 24-year-old has joined the Championship front-runners on a season-long loan from French Ligue 1 outfit RC Lens, aiming to contribute to the club’s push for Premier League promotion.

Abdul Samed was notably absent from Ghana’s squad for the upcoming AFCON qualifiers but is expected to make his debut for Sunderland after the international break. His arrival at the Black Cats comes after a successful spell at RC Lens, where he formed a formidable midfield partnership with Ivorian star Sekou Fofana, helping the club return to the UEFA Champions League.

Before his time at Lens, Abdul Samed was instrumental in Clermont Foot’s promotion to Ligue 1, impressing in his debut season in France’s topflight. His performances caught the eye of Lens, who quickly moved to secure his services. Now, the Ghanaian midfielder is eager to replicate that success in England’s second-tier league.

Speaking to Sunderland’s official website, Abdul Samed expressed his excitement about the move, stating, “I’m very happy to be here… To win four games in a row is very difficult, but four games is not enough, and we need to continue to work hard and get more wins.”

His loan move could become permanent if he delivers on the pitch, with the Black Cats looking to sustain their early-season momentum.
