Steve Bruce names Asamoah Gyan as his most flamboyant player at Sunderland

Former Sunderland manager Steve Bruce has identified Asamoah Gyan as the most flamboyant player he coached during his tenure at the club.

Gyan, who was also the captain of the Ghanaian national team, joined Sunderland in 2010 for a then club-record fee of £13 million.

In a recent TikTok Q&A session, Bruce reflected on his time with the Black Cats, recalling Gyan’s unique style and vibrant personality.

“Without question, we had a kid called Asamoah Gyan who we signed at Sunderland,” Bruce said. “He was the flashiest player I’ve ever managed.”

Gyan’s stay at Sunderland was brief but memorable. During the 2010/2011 Premier League season, he made 34 appearances and scored 10 goals.

However, after just one season, he secured a loan move to Al-Ain in the United Arab Emirates, which later became a permanent transfer.

Asamoah retired in 2023, cementing his legacy as Ghana’s all-time top scorer and the African player with the most goals in World Cup history.
