2026 WCQ: Sudan flourishes under Ghanaian coach Kwasi Appiah

Sudan’s national football team is experiencing a resurgence under the guidance of Ghanaian head coach Kwasi Appiah.

The team has remained unbeaten in six of their last seven matches, demonstrating a newfound solidity and effectiveness on the pitch.

Recent victories have further highlighted Sudan’s upward trajectory. A decisive 2-0 triumph over Mauritania was followed by a commanding 3-0 win against fierce rivals South Sudan, reinforcing their position as a team to watch in African football.

Currently, Sudan tops their 2026 World Cup qualifying group with 10 points from four matches.

They have scored seven goals while conceding only one—a testament to their defensive robustness and attacking dexterity.

This lone goal came in a 1-1 draw against Togo in 2023. Sudan leads Group B, a challenging group that includes former African champions Senegal, DR Congo, Togo, South Sudan, and Mauritania.

Appiah’s familiarity with Sudanese football has been instrumental in their recent success. His previous stint in Sudan in 2014 saw him managing Al Khartoum, where he led the team to the CAF Confederation Cup by finishing fourth in the league—a significant achievement for the club.

Appiah’s reputation was further cemented when he became the first black African coach to lead Ghana to the World Cup in Brazil in 2014.

Now, he aims to replicate that success with Sudan, a feat that would mark a significant milestone in his coaching career and for Sudanese football.
