Ronaldo is a latter-day saint, I popularized football in Middle East – Mohammed Polo

Ghanaian football great Mohammed Polo says his career in the Middle East impacted world interest in the region’s football.

The Hearts of Oak legend had a spell in Dubai club Al Wasl during the latter stages of his fruitful career.

Polo was speaking to Angel FM as he addressed the influence of the Saudi Pro League in the current summer transfer window.

Top European-based players like Sadio Mane, Karim Benzema, Ngolo Kante, among others have joined Cristiano Ronaldo, who moved to Al Nassr in 2022, to continue their football career.

Polo asserts that he had a similar popularity to what Al Nassr’s captain enjoys now in Saudi Arabia during his play days in the Middle East.

“Ronaldo is a latter-day saint. It’s his time now and everybody has their time.

“Slavery started in the Arabian world so there was no way they would carry a black person but they did it for me because they didn’t understand I was too good.

“It was even the twilight of my football but what they saw was Wow!”

Mohammed Polo also played for Ghana’s senior national team, the Black Stars and coached his former club, Hearts of Oak as well.
