Poor pitches hindering quality of football in Betpawa Premier League

Former Ghana International Augustine Arhinful says poor playing surfaces hampers performance of clubs in the betPawa Premier League.

The standard of infrastructure in the League has come under massive scrutiny this season with several games being televised, showing teams playing on “unplayable” surfaces.

Last weekend, pictures of the Golden City Park which was the venue for Berekum Chelsea’s fixture against Asante Kotoko surfaced on social media

The images drew disparaging remarks from social media users who questioned the relevance of the Club Licensing body.

Augustine Arhinful, a former golden boot winner in the local league, bemoaned the poor playing surfaces and cited it as a major hindrance in the clubs’ ability to play good football.

“First of all, my big issue has to do with the pitches we have in the country.

“The nature of our pitches is so bumpy that it becomes difficult for ball progression and we can’t get to see the flow of football.

“We have talents in this country, but we can’t only use talents to reach the apex of football.

“We need to develop these talents and it first starts with having good pitches for these talents to be able to play the best of football” – Arhinful told Takoradi-based Empire FM.

The 2022/23 betPawa Ghana Premier League is currently on matchweek 27 with Aduana Stars as league leaders.
