Newcastle holding interest in Mohammed Salisu – reports

Southampton defender Mohamed Salisu is reported to be of interest to Newcastle United, and the club might pursue him during the summer transfer window.

The Ghanaian international’s contract with the Saints runs out in June 2024, meaning he could be available for a cheaper price.

According to The Sun, the Magpies considered signing Salisu in the January transfer window of 2022 soon after the takeover by the Saudi investment fund PIF.

Salisu, 23, fits the age and profile of the type of player Newcastle are keen to recruit and they see the centre-back as someone they could develop into a top star.

Salisu, who joined Southampton in the summer of 2020 from Real Valladolid on a four-year contract. He is now left with about 15 months to the end of his contract at St Mary’s this summer and Newcastle feel they could land him for a cut-price fee of £15 million or less.

The powerful defender is expected to leave Southampton in the summer if they suffer relegation from the Premier League.

Mohammed Salisu is yet to make an appearance under new Saints manager Ruben Selles due to injury.
