Giroud becomes all-time top scorer for France with 52 goals

Olivier Giroud scored against Poland in the World Cup last-16 clash on Sunday to become France’s all-time top scorer with 52 goals.

Giroud, 36, had shared the record with Thierry Henry after netting a double in the defending champions’ 4-1 win against Australia in their opening Group D game.

In the Round of 16 contest, the new record was set just before the break when Kyllian Mbappe played a pin-point ball through to Giroud, who hammered it past a diving former Arsenal teammate Wojciech Szczesny – it’s goal number 52 for Les Bleus.

Mbappe then struck twice in the second half while Robert Lewandowski converted a penalty to console the Poles who exited the Mundial with a 3-1 defeat.

Defending champions thus France advance to the quarterfinals.
