The Confederation of African Football (Caf) has given approval for Asante Kotoko to use the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi as home venue in the 2022/23 inter-club competitions.
The Porcupine Warriors – by virtue of their status as winners of the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League (GPL) – will be representing the country in the upcoming season’s Caf Champions League.
For the first preliminary round of the competition, Kotoko are due to face Burkinabe champions Rail Club du Kadiogo on September 9 for the first leg away before hosting the second at their now-approved traditional grounds in Ghana’s second-largest city.
It was initially feared the Baba Yara Stadium may not be available after Caf automatically removed the facility from its approved list after granting Ghana a one-match use of the stadium for the 2022 World Cup playoffs against Nigeria.
“This comes after the Caf Club Licensing department granted Asante Kotoko SC license to use the Baba Yara Stadium for its home matches.
“The collaborative work between the Club, GFA and the National Sports Authority ensured that the Stadium meets the club licensing requirements,” an official confirmation from the Ghana FA Monday read.
With this approval, Kotoko will not have to travel to use the Cape Coast Stadium – the only pre-approved facility in Ghana – to play their Africa matches.
Asante Kotoko will host Rail Club du Kadiogo on Sunday, September 18, 2022. Kickoff is at 15:00 GMT.
