Stoppage-time red card for Afena-Gyan in AS Roma win

Ghana youngster Felix Afena-Gyan received his first career red card upon recovering from COVID to AS Roma first-team action Monday night.

The 18-year-old – after coming off the bench in the 64th minute for Mayoral – was later sent off in an unusual fashion in stoppage time having thought he had scored the third goal in their 2-0 win over Spezia.

Afena-Gyan was dismissed for what was deemed an intentional handball at the edge of the box, leaving manager Jose Mourinho incensed.

The forward had believed he’d scored from his ensuing shot to give his side a 3-0 advantage only to turn around from his celebration to see the referee lifting a second yellow in his direction.

And Mourinho screamed from the touchline before escorting the player down the tunnel.

The Portuguese did not comment on the incident after full-time.

AS Roma are now sixth in the Serie A table, but languishing eight points behind the Champions League qualification spots.
