FC Blau-Weiß Linz terminate contract with Raphael Dwamena

Austrian second-tier side, FC Blau-Weiß Linz have terminated the contract of Ghana striker Raphael Dwamena.

This is because of the 26-year-old’s recurring heart problem – the latest on Wednesday, October 27.

Dwamena collapsed during an Austrian Cup game between his club and Hartberg.

Blau-Weiß Linza Sporting Director Tino Wawra told Laola: “There was an appointment this week when we told him and his management that it was no longer an option for us that he is on the pitch for us. The risk is just too great for us.

“We are very sorry for him. Apart from Salzburg, you won’t find a player with the quality of a healthy Raphael Dwamena in all of Austria.

“It’s a shame that he probably has to think about a final retirement now. He is a great guy, has a top character. That’s why the decision is all the more difficult for us.”

Raphael Dwamena failed medicals at Premier League side Brighton and Hove in 2017 because of the heart condition.

In January 2020, while at Levante UD he had an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) implanted through surgery, which enabled his club to monitor his heart during matches.

The ICD showed values which were considered too high in October 2020 and his club at the time, Vejle Boldklub, withdrew him from team activities as a result.
