Asamoah Boateng goal hands resilient Legon Cities draw at WAFA

Asamoah Boateng Afriyie struck late for Legon Cities as they picked a point from their pulsating game against WAFA SC at Sogakope Park Sunday afternoon.

The 2021/22 Ghana Premier League (GPL) match-day three clash which ended 2-2 is Cities second draw for the season since their 1-1 stalemate against Hearts of Oak.

WAFA will be cursing their stars after taking the lead twice but failed to contain the Royals who finished the game in a strong display.

The Academy boys still await their first victory of the league season, having lost two and drawn two games now after four matches.

But they began the encounter as the better side and just five minutes into the game, Lawrence Agyekum found the opener.

The determined visitors did not take long to restore parity; Abdul Rahman scored in the 8th minute after being set up by Jonah Attuquaye.

WAFA then continued piling pressure but the final ball was lacking.

In the 35th minute, the hosts nearly found themselves back in the lead when Samson Agyemang hit a brilliant freekick at the edge of the Royals’ 18-yard box.

The midfielder’s drive could only find the crossbar despite beating Cities goalkeeper Eric Ofori Antwi.

As the game headed to halftime, forward Justus Torsutsey headed home to give WAFA their second lead of the game.

The hosts failed to control most parts of the second half and as the game drew close to the end, Legon Cities attacked better.

The Royals, from their consistent attacks, got the leveller in the 84th minute with second-half substitute Asamoah Boateng Afriyie.

Afriyie nearly bagged his second of the game minutes later but his effort was poor.

Now both sides will switch their focus on match-day five; WAFA will play at home against Great Olympics while Legon Cities welcome Aduana FC.
