2022 WCQ: Black Stars keep the pace with 3-1 home win against Zimbabwe

Ghana responded positively to Group G leaders South Africa’s 3-1 win over Ethiopia earlier in the day with an emphatic victory over Zimbabwe at Cape Coast Sports Stadium.

The Black Stars were also 3-1 victors against the Warriors Saturday evening in their third-round game under new coach Milovan Rajevac.

Mohammed Kudus scored the only goal in the first half for Ghana before captain Knowledge Musona pulled parity for Zimbabwe three minutes into the second half from the spot.

Thomas Partey and Andre Ayew then scored two great goals to get Ghana back to winning ways after the defeat to South Africa in the second round last month.

The victory means the four-time African champions are now one point behind leaders Bafana Bafana, who have 7 points. Zimbabwe sits bottom of Group G with just a point.

Kudus scored a brilliant opener for Ghana in the 5th minute off a brilliant build-up from the left flank.

Jordan Ayew laid the ball back to the Ajax star, and he slotted in with his weak right foot.

The Warriors got the leveler through captain Musona’s effort from the spot four minutes into the second half.

He fired into the right top corner as goalkeeper Jojo Wollacott went the other way.

Jordan Zemura blasted the crossbar in the 57th minute with a great shot from the edge of the box.

Thomas Partey scored an individual goal in the 66th minute to put Ghana back ahead.

The Arsenal star stole the ball from a Zimbabwe defender, skipped past another, and tucked it into the near post.

Captain Andre Ayew scored a great header three minutes to the full-time whistle.

He connected well to a great delivery by Baba Rahman from the left flank to end the game 3-1 in favour of the Black Stars.

The two sides will face off in the return fixture in Harare on Tuesday, October 12, 2021
