Afcon 2015: ‘I still don’t believe Black Stars lost that tournament’ – Atsu

Winger Christian Atsu is still hurt by Ghana’s failure to win the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) trophy.

Over six years ago in Equatorial Guinea, the Black Stars came very close to breaking the country’s trophy drought after reaching the grand finale but let slip an advantage in the penalty shootout and lost to Ivory Coast.

“I still don’t believe we lost that tournament,” he told 3Sports.

According to the former Newcastle United player, Ghana were favourites for the trophy but let their guard down when the glowious opportunity presented itself that year.

“That trophy was like when someone gives you something; you just take it.

“And today I’ll say Ghanaians are right, whatever words they say to us, we deserve it because we gave the tournament away and it was really bad.

“Till now, I feel very sad that I am 29, I’m growing and I’ve still not won the Afcon title, and it’s very sad.”

Ghana are still chasing their first major tournament in over 3 decades despite being one of the hub of talents production in Africa.

“Yeah, I’d say with the kind of players we have, we shouldn’t be speaking about the Black Stars not winning the Afcon for like 35 years or 36 years,” Atsu added.
