He made 121 senior appearances during the spell, scoring eight goals with his most important contribution at the club coming through their quick Premier League return in the 2016/17 season.
Christian Atsu did not play much for Newcastle in the final year of his contract. He was cut out of the first-team picture by Magpies’ head coach Steve Bruce in the just-ended 2020/21 season.
Atsu was left out of the club’s 25-man Premier League squad at the start of the season, but then added back into it in January, following the exit of DeAndre Yedlin to Galatasaray.
Despite his availability, Atsu was never considered for even a bench role when Newcastle faced an injury crisis in the final months of the season.
