Legon Cities boost survival hopes with late comeback win over Liberty

Legon Cities gave their Ghana Premier League survival hopes a welcome boost after fighting from behind to beat fellow strugglers Liberty Professionals 2-1 on match-day 24 at the Accra Sports Stadium Wednesday night.

The Royals, with their last game away to Ebusua Dwarfs ending abruptly, needed victory to move out of the relegation and did so by digging deep to land a stoppage-time winner.

Winger Abraham Wayo came close to breaking the deadlock for Liberty in the 15th minute but Cities goalkeeper Winfred Honu did well to deny him.

On 25 minutes, Victorien Adebayor came up with a good chance to put Legon Cities ahead but captain Kofi Baah, in post for the visitors, was equal to the Niger international’s effort at goal as the first half ended barren.

The deadlock was finally broken 9 minutes from time with Liberty striker Kweku Karikari scoring to send a shudder down the spine of the under-pressure Royals.

But the lead lasted just five minutes as Liberty conceded an own goal. Baba Mahama’s effort was turned in by left-back Evans Owusu.

And the best came for Legon Cities when winger Jonah Attuquaye smashed home two minutes into additional time to seal a stunning comeback victory.

The 2-1 result lifts Legon Cities out of the relegation zone and into 15th spot with 26 points while they await the determination of their last game with Dwarfs by the GFA.

Liberty, on the other hand, are back leading the drop zone with 25 points from 24 matches.
