Reported call for Black Stars camping in Europe – Kurt Okraku responds

Ghana Football Association (GFA) President, Kurt Okraku says the football governing body has not requested for the Black Stars to camp in Europe next month despite the postponement of the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers.

The senior national team will not play in June after the Confederation of African Football decided to move the games to September due to COVID-19 challenges.

The GFA had planned a two-week camping exercise for the Black Stars in late May in an unnamed European country to help the team prepare for their opening two World Cup qualifying games in June against Ethiopia and South Africa.

Days after the rescheduling of the African qualifiers to the 2022 Fifa World Cup, reports emerged that the GFA wants to go ahead with its original plan despite the team having no immediate assignment.

The reports further claimed that the Black Stars technical handlers are hoping to assess the team by using the June international break for friendly matches and the FA has been in touch with the Sports Ministry over the decision.

In a reaction via Facebook, Kurt Okraku wrote:

“I read in the public space about a purported plan by our FA to camp (Black Stars) in Europe even though our June World Cup games have been shifted to September 2021.

“The Ghana FA / Sports Ministry have not made that call and in due season, we will officially roll out our plan for the team.”

The Black Stars are hoping to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar after missing out on the 2018 edition in Russia.

They are in the same group as Ethiopia, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
